Preparations for the vibrant festival of Holi are in full swing in Udaipur, with the city bustling with activity as locals gear up for the colorful festivities. One of the highlights of the preparations is the making of herbal gulal, a traditional colored powder used during Holi celebrations.
Forest Committee Engaged in Gulal Production
Members of the Forest Committee are currently immersed in the process of making herbal gulal at a nursery near the city. Utilizing Bougainvillea, Palash flower and Rose flowers, they have successfully produced 5 quintals of gulal in various hues including green, yellow, pink, red, and orange.
Stalls Set to Grace Tourist Spots
To cater to the festive demands, stalls selling the herbal gulal will be set up at prominent tourist attractions such as Saheliyon ki Badi, Karni Mata Rope-Way, RK Mall, Moti Magri, and Fateh Sagar Lake by the Tourism Department.
Expansion Plans and Distribution
With the current production in place, the committee aims to produce an additional 15 quintals of gulal. This surplus will be distributed to various cities including Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
Pricing and Economic Impact
The herbal gulal will be priced at Rs 160 per kilogram, with the Forest Department offering packets of 250 grams for Rs 50 and 1 kilogram for Rs 160. Local women from the committee are actively involved in the production process, not only providing employment but also benefiting from a share in the profits generated from the sale of the products.
Traditional Methods
Despite technological advancements, the production of herbal gulal in Udaipur continues to adhere to traditional methods. Women collect flowers from the jungle and temples, which are then boiled and processed to create the vibrant colors. Following drying and grinding, the gulal is meticulously packed in various weights, ensuring a seamless distribution process.
