Udaipur, Sept 13, 2025: Mrs. Sushila Karki, former Chief Justice of the Nepal Supreme Court, was sworn in as Nepal's first woman Prime Minister, who will lead the country's interim government whilst the Himalayan nation battles deep rooted violence. The protests which emanated from the country's blocking of social media were further fuelled with pent up anger on social, economic and political issues within Nepal. These violent protests led to the dissolution of the parliament and collapse of the earlier government, leading to the appointment of the new Prime Minister to lead the interim government.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today extended his best wishes to Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. He reaffirmed that India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal.

A post on the Prime Minister's X handle, said: “I extend my best wishes to Right Hon. Mrs. Sushila Karki on assuming office as the Prime Minister of the Interim Government of Nepal. India remains firmly committed to the peace, progress and prosperity of the people of Nepal.”

Karki, a consenses candidate acceptable both to the protest leaders and the Nepalese Army, is an alumni of the prestigous Banaras Hindu University in Uttar Pradesh and is known for her will power and integrity, which were highlighted by her tough decisions during her tenure with the Nepal Supreme Court. The genreal elections in Nepal have been scheduled for March 5, 2026 and in the meantime, Karki's government has been tasked with restoring order and investigating the violence that rocked the otherwise peaceful Himalayan nation.
