Traffic Jams in Udaipur

The city experienced chaotic traffic as the tourist season reached its peak. On Sunday, December 24,2023, every intersection in the city suffered from a traffic jam, extending from Gulab Bagh to Wall City. The roads connecting prominent areas like Shilpgram, Sukhadia Circle, Fatehpura, RK Circle and Ambamata were gridlocked for hours. The situation was exacerbated by the Christmas holiday, extending the weekend by a day. As a result, similar challenging conditions may be anticipated during coming days, with the traffic woes persisting due to the holiday extension.

As the long weekend unfolded, Udaipur City saw an influx of tourists from states such as Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Delhi. However, the surge in visitors brought with it a challenge – thousands of vehicles congested the city's roads, leading to a decline in traffic management on Sunday afternoon.

Covering a mere two kilometers took an entire hour. Within Wall City, queues of vehicles snaked through key points like Gulab Bagh, Rangniwas, Kalaji Goraji Intersection, Chetak Circle, Court Intersection, Delhi Gate, Surajpol and Udaipole. Surprisingly, many locations lacked the presence of traffic police, leading to a gradual rise in vehicular congestion.

The Udaipur Municipal Corporation is actively pursuing measures to address encroachments within the city. Municipal Commissioner Vasudev Malavat, on Monday, December 25, 2023, issued directives to identify encroachments and assigned the responsibility to Deputy Town Planner Sirajuddin for oversight.

On Sunday, MLA Tarachand Jain addressed the pressing need to revitalize the ailing traffic system in the city. He conveyed this urgency through a letter to SP Bhuvan Bhushan Yadav. The letter outlined various instances of encroachments exacerbating the issue. Jain expressed deep concern regarding the daily traffic gridlocks caused by encroachments along key routes such as Gulab Bagh Marg, Patel Circle, Kalaji Goraji, Surajpol, Bapu Bazaar, Shastri Circle, Udai Pol, Delhi Gate and Sevashram.

In response to these challenges, there is an anticipation that the Municipal Corporation may undertake an initiative to tackle encroachments, with the potential commencement of removal efforts starting Tuesday.
