Aravalli Conservation Issue: Protests Intensify in Rajasthan
Congress workers and social organisations staged statewide protests to save the Aravalli range
Udaipur, Dec 22, 2025 - Opposition against the weakening of protection for the Aravalli mountain range has intensified in Rajasthan. The Congress party and various social organisations staged protests across the State, demanding the conservation of the Aravallis. In Udaipur, a scuffle broke out between Congress workers and the police during a protest at the District Collectorate. Protesters raised slogans, and the police detained some of the demonstrators.
Protests were also held in Sikar to save the Aravalli range. Environmental activists and organisations gathered at Harsh Parvat, located at an altitude of 945 metres, and demanded the rollback of decisions that harm the Aravalli ecosystem.
Readers may recall that according to a Supreme Court verdict delivered on November 20, 2025, only landforms with a height of 100 metres or more from the ground will be considered part of the Aravalli hills. With the implementation of this criterion, more than 90 percent of the Aravalli hills would be excluded from the protected zone. Following this verdict, voices calling for the protection of the Aravallis have grown stronger.
In Udaipur, Congress workers, members of the Karni Sena, finance groups and other social organisations came together at the Collectorate to demand the withdrawal of the Supreme Court order. Clashes occurred between the police and protesters during the demonstration.
Environmentalists expressed concern that if people living in the Aravalli region are displaced, they may resettle elsewhere, but wildlife would face a severe crisis. They questioned where animals would go if forests are destroyed.
Protesters clearly said that if decisions related to the conservation of the Aravalli range are not reconsidered, the movement would be intensified further.
