Qatar released the eight Indian Navy veterans who were accused of spying and sentenced to death. Seven of them are now back in India. This is a big win for diplomacy between India and Qatar. On Monday, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement expressing its approval of the recent development. The MEA welcomed the return of seven out of the eight former Indian Navy personnel employed by the private firm Dahra Global Company, who had been working in Qatar.
These eight former Indian Navy personnel, Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashisht, Commander Purenendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Ragesh, served with distinction for up to 20 years.
Qatar's Court of First Instance accepted India's appeal against the death sentence given to the Navy veterans. Several weeks following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Qatar's Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani on the sidelines of the COP28 summit in Dubai, a noteworthy development took place.
