Mild tremors felt in Kolkata and parts of north Bengal; epicentre was 91 kms deep in Bay of Bengal
February 25, 2025 – An earthquake of magnitude 5.1 on the Richter Scale hit the Bay of Bengal, near Puri in Odisha, at 6:10 am today. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the quake occurred at a depth of 91 kilometres with tremors being felt in Kolkata and other parts of north Bengal.
No loss of lives or property was reported and the tremors felt were not intense because of the epicentre of the quake being in the Bay of Bengal, off the coast of Puri.
Compared to the February 17 Delhi earthquake, today’s tremors were milder even though the intensity was higher. This is because the February 17 earthquake’s epicentre was Delhi and at just at a depth of 5 kms. Delhi residents had reported a booming sound with strong tremors.
