Udaipur, November 22, 2024 - Rajasthan Transport Department has started a strict campaign against vehicle owners using registrations from other states to evade taxes. In a major drive, challans are being issued to such vehicles operating in the city.
Large vehicles like buses, trucks, and taxis with national permits are exempt from the action since they can legally operate across states. However, the department has already issued challans to 246 vehicles, mostly smaller ones.
Most of the vehicles fined had Gujarat registration numbers. This is because Gujarat imposes a 6% tax on vehicles, while Rajasthan's tax is 12%. The difference results in savings of Rs 1 to Rs 3 lakh for four-wheelers, prompting many to buy vehicles from Gujarat, especially as it’s a neighbouring state.
Regions like Kherwara, Nayagaon, Jhadol, Phalasiya, and Kotda have a high number of vehicles with Gujarat registration plates. The department is conducting checks on all major highways and roads in these areas.
The campaign has already brought in Rs 2.5 crore in revenue. Seven teams have been deployed across the district to stop and inspect vehicles. This strict enforcement aims to curb tax evasion and promote fair practices.
