Udaipur is a rare habitat of the Rhesus Macaque (Macaca Mulatta) Monkey, which is being spotted near the outskirts of the city at Rani Road.
This is a rare species, not native to the jungles of the southern part of Rajasthan. Macaca Mulatta inhabits a great variety of habitats from grasslands to arid and forested areas but they are mostly found close to human settlements.
Dr. Satish Sharma, Wildlife warden said that this kind of monkey is native to the Northern part of Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh and Uttrakhand.
“These monkeys are aggressive and even said to be a threat to public as they are blamed for ransacking a lonely house and sometimes they are not even afraid to attacking any person on being teased”, said Dr. Sharma.
Monkey charmers catch these rare animals for amusement purpose for their living but sometimes some of the animals escape and sometimes sick animals are left abandoned by these monkey charmers, where at the same time there are not any rescue centers for these animals.
The Rhesus Macaque is brown or grey in color and has a pink face and they are highly territorial. To join us on Facebook Click Here and Subscribe to UdaipurTimes Broadcast channels on GoogleNews | Telegram | Signal
