Vultures spotted in Menar

Udaipur, February 10, 2025 - More than 50 long-billed vultures, a critically endangered species, were spotted in Bird Village Menar. These vultures were seen in the catchment area of the Menar pond, feeding on a large dead cattle. This is considered a positive sign, as the species population has declined by 90-95% in recent years.

Vultures on the IUCN Red List

A large flock of Long-Billed Vultures, Griffon Vultures, and Cinereous Vultures was seen in Menar. The Long-Billed Vulture is critically endangered as per the IUCN Red List, while the Griffon vulture is classified as threatened. Egyptian vultures are also commonly seen in Menar in locations such as Mela Ground, Bhil Basti, and the Khaudiar Mata Temple.

Largest Vulture Sighting Since 2019

Bird enthusiast Yudhishthir Ekling Dasot observed this rare sight near Bhil Basti School by the pond. This is the largest gathering of vultures in Menar since 2019 when over 100 vultures were spotted. Compared to previous years, this sighting shows an increase in vulture numbers in the region.

Why Vultures Are Declining?

The main reason for the decline in vulture populations is the consumption of diseased carcasses. Pesticides and diclofenac, used in agriculture and livestock, harm vultures when they consume dead animals. These chemicals cause kidney failure and reduce the birds' reproductive capacity, pushing them toward extinction.

Menar’s Role in Vulture Conservation

Menar’s natural environment provides a suitable habitat for both resident and migratory vultures. This sighting is a hopeful sign for nature lovers and conservationists working to protect these important scavengers.
