2017 was a very eventful year for Udaipur. While 2017 gave us some moments of extreme pride, it also left behind some tragic marks which the city may never forget. We have collated a list of 9 big stories from the year gone (almost) by. The stories are in no particular order of importance or otherwise:

1. Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Udaipur

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a high impact visit to Udaipur on August 29, 2017. The visit was not only an highlight event of Udaipur but of the entire State as Prime Minister Modi inaugurated highway and road projects worth Rs15,000 crore during his 3 hour visit to the city. His opening the public speech with “Khamma Gani” will stay etched with all those who were there to hear the PM speak. PM also visited Pratap Gaurav Kendra during his short visit. 2. Inauguration of Passport Office in Udaipur

After a long wait and multiple postponements, Passport Seva Laghu Kendra was finally opened in Udaipur on 2-June. V.K.Singh, Minister of State for External Affairs inaugurated the centre and with it eased the pains of all the people in Mewar region. Click here for details.

3. Udaipur boy topped JEE-Mains with record score of 360/360

Udaipur boy Kalpit Veerwal created history by scoring 360/360 in the JEE-Mains exam. He not only topped the exam but became the first person ever to ace the exam with 100% score. 4. Udaipur discovered a new swimming queen in Gaurvi Singhvi

Udaipur girl Gaurvi Singhvi Singhvi completed the stretch from Worli Sea Link to Gateway of India, in a record time of 6 hours, 35 minutes and 34 seconds. With this she broke the earlier open sea swimming record for 36kms. Click here for details.

5. Tragedy: 4 dead while cleaning a septic tank

In one of the most tragic incidents of the year, four people died while on 2-Apr while trying to clean a septic tank. The incident took place in Ashok Vihar-Hirabaug colony situated on Sobhagpura 100 ft road. Three cleaners along with the son of the house-owner succumbed to the poisonous gas inside the tank. 6. Tragedy: 4-year old girl drowned in Fateh Sagar after speed boat overturned

4 year old girl, Chahak, drowned after the speed boat that they were riding in hit a moving motor boat. It took rescue operations almost two days to recover the girl’s body. This is an event that the city will possibly never forget. Click here for details.

7. 2017: The year of internet suspensions

Internet services were suspended twice in Udaipur during 2017. The suspensions were made to keep the law and order situation under control in the city. The first suspension happened in April after an objectionable social media posting on Facebook by a Fatehnagar resident. The second suspension happened recently after objectionable comments were made post the gruesome murder by Shambhulal Regar in Rajsamand.

8. Celebrity wedding: Neil Nitin Mukesh took home Rukmini

9. Time to clean up: Dismal Swachh Ranking

Udaipur ranked a lowly 310 out of 434 cities according to the ‘Swachh Survekshan-2017’ ranking announced by Government of India. This shook the entire city and got the administration into immediate action. Working towards getting the city open defecation free, door to door garbage collection, ensuring downloads of Swachhta apps are some of the steps taken by the administration to ensure that the city stands out at the other extreme next year. 10. Udaipur girl wins Gold and Bronze in International Skating

8-year old Labdhi Surana made the city proud on International level by winning a gold and bronze medal in 39th International Speed Skating Kriterium in Gross-Gerau, Germany.
