Sajjangarh Lion Safari in Udaipur is set to welcome its first Asiatic lions, 'Samrat' and 'Sunaina,' who will soon roam freely in their new home. These lions, brought from Sakkarbaug Biological Park in Junagadh, are completing their 21-day quarantine period today on August 21, 2024. The Lion Safari’s inauguration is expected in October, with 70% of the construction already finished.
Two Lions Were Kept Separate Cages
During quarantine, 'Samrat' and 'Sunaina' were kept in separate cages to monitor their health and behavior. After the quarantine, they will be gradually introduced to each other in a suitable environment to ensure a smooth transition. Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) Devendra Kumar Tiwari confirmed that both lions are now healthy and adjusted well, including 'Samrat,' whose head injury from the journey has healed.
The Zoo Development Trust is overseeing the construction of this 20-hectare Lion Safari, with an investment of Rs 345 Lakh. The safari will feature 10 cages to accommodate a growing lion population, with 'Samrat' and 'Sunaina' being the first residents.
State's First Reptile House
In addition, Sajjangarh Biological Park is preparing to open the state's first Reptile House, costing Rs 90 Lakh. The highlight will be the 'King Cobra,' the world's longest venomous snake. Divisional Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) S.R. Venkateshwara Murthy is reaching out to South Indian biological parks to secure this attraction. Special cages with ten partitions each have been built near the Gharial enclosure to house various reptile species, allowing visitors to view them through transparent glass panels.
