Jaipur autopsy reveals electrocution and head injury; striking resident doctors demand fair probe
Udaipur, June 23, 2025 - A new twist has emerged in the case of Dr Ravi Sharma’s death owing to electrocution at the PG hostel of Rabindranath Tagore (RNT) Medical College in Udaipur. A second postmortem report from SMS Medical College in Jaipur confirms that Dr Sharma died from electrocution followed by a head injury. However, the initial report by RNT did not clearly mention electrocution as the cause of death, deepening the controversy.
Dr Prashant Sharma, cousin of the deceased and a resident doctor, has made serious allegations, claiming that the RNT Medical College medical board concealed the truth in the report and tampered with the samples. He said, “I feel utterly helpless that a doctor in this country dies from electrocution and is denied justice. If even an educated doctor is not safe, what hope is there for the common people?”
A medical team from Jaipur, led by Dr Deepali Pathak and including a plastic surgeon, pathologist and medical jurist, conducted a second postmortem on June 21. According to the police, their report clearly states that the cause of death was electrocution followed by a head injury.
On the other hand, Dr Akhilesh Sharma, head of the RNT Medical College medical board, defended their report, saying that terms like "abrasion" and "scratches" were used, which also indicate injuries. He added that the exact cause of the injuries would have been clarified after the FSL (Forensic Science Laboratory) report, and that there was no pressure on them to protect the college administration.
Since the incident, around 600 resident doctors affiliated with RNT Medical College have been on strike for the fourth consecutive day now. The doctors are demanding proper compensation for the deceased’s family, action against the responsible officials and a fair and transparent investigation into the matter.
All eyes are now on the next steps to be taken by the State Government and police.
