Sajjan Kumar, the former Congress leader, was on February 12 convicted for the murders of Jaswant Singh and son Tarundeep in 1984; complainant had been demanding dealth penalty
February 25, 2025 – Former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar has been awarded life imprisonment by a Delhi Court for his alleged involvement in the murders during the anti-Sikh riots in 1984. Kumar was implicated in the alleged killing of Jaswant Singh and his son Tarundeep Singh on November 1, in 1984.
Special judge Kaveri Baweja pronounced the judgement following conviction by the Court on February 12 which had found him guilty of the the Jaswant-Tarundeep duo murders.
Jaswant’s wife and some members of the Sikh community had been demanding capital punishment for Kumar ahead of the sentencing.
Singh and his son had been killed in a mob attack in Delhi’s Saraswati Vihar during the anti-Sikh riots following the assassination of the-then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Kumar was charged with inciting and abetting mobs which went on a rampage against the Sikh community to avenge Gandhi’s murder.
The former Congress leader is currently in Tihar jail where he has been since 2018 after being sentenced to life in another anti-Sikh riot case in Delhi Cantt.
