The Sajjangarh Biological Park in Udaipur is set to become a major attraction with the development of a lion safari and plans for a lion breeding center. This initiative aims to increase both tourism and lion conservation efforts.
The lion safari is being constructed over a 20-hectare area by the Zoo Development Trust, which is investing Rs 3.45 crore in the project. The construction includes a holding area with 10 cages to accommodate the growing lion population.
Animal Exchange Program
The breeding program will begin with the arrival of a pair of lions from Junagadh, Gujarat. As the population increases, lions from other places will be added. The park aims to eventually participate in an animal exchange program with other zoos.
Enclosure Construction Near Completion
Construction of the enclosures is progressing rapidly, with a completion deadline set for September. However, there is optimism that the work may be finished ahead of schedule. Earlier this year, in February, the Central Zoo Authority approved the transfer of a male and female lion from Junagadh to Udaipur for the safari.
Tiger Safari in Future
In the future, there are also plans to establish a tiger safari in the park. The proposal for lion and tiger safaris was sent to the Central Zoo Authority nearly six years ago and was approved in April 2023. The tiger safari is planned over 26 hectares with an estimated cost of Rs 3.8 crore. However, the focus is currently on the lion safari, and the tiger safari will follow later.
