Sajjangarh Biological Park to Welcome Rajasthan’s First Giraffes
Udaipur, November 11,2024 - Sajjangarh Biological Park in Udaipur will soon house a pair of giraffes, making it the first time Rajasthan welcomes these animals. After successful reptile and lion safaris, the park is moving forward with this addition to enhance visitor experiences.
Special Enclosure Underway
A special enclosure for the giraffes will be built near Gate No. 3. This display area will showcase the giraffes, while preparations for the lion safari are also progressing on the other side of this gate. The tender process to build the giraffe enclosure is already underway.
Timeline for Arrival
The goal is to complete the enclosure by March next year. Giraffes will be brought from zoos in other states, and visitors can expect to see them by April or May. This addition is anticipated to draw more tourists to Udaipur.
Expert Approval for Giraffe Habitat
Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), SRV Murthy, explained that giraffe expert Tushar Kulkarni from Maharashtra inspected the park to ensure it’s suitable for giraffes. He checked the climate, terrain, and other factors necessary for their comfort.
Kulkarni confirmed that the environment in Sajjangarh is ideal, as giraffes are desert animals. Their height will also require special arrangements for feeding, tailored to their natural needs.
Budget and Breeding Plans
The Udaipur Development Authority (UDA) has set a budget of Rs 2 crore for the project. Under an animal exchange program, the park will bring a male and female giraffe, aiming to encourage breeding.
Exchange Program Details
The park will provide wolves in exchange for the giraffes. Currently, giraffes are found in zoos in Mysore, Patna, Kolkata, Visakhapatnam, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Chennai, and Odisha. The giraffe pair is most likely to come from the Mysore Bio Park.
