Samrat Choudhary takes oath as Bihar’s first BJP Chief Minister, marking a historic shift after Nitish Kumar’s 21-year tenure

April 15, 2026 - Samrat Choudhary was sworn in today (April 15) as the Chief Minister of Bihar, thus creating history by becoming the first-ever BJP CM of Bihar. The erstwhile Deputy CM was administered the oath of office by Governor Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain at Lok Bhawan in Patna.

Nitish Kumar of the Janata Dal (United - JDU) had held the top post for the last 21 years and was CM for a record 10 times. His resignation came on Tuesday (April 14) after he dissolved the State Cabinet following its last-ever meeting with him as CM. Kumar is now all set to join the Upper House of Parliament as member.

Choudhary (57) was once a member of the JDU before joining the BJP in 2017. He was appointed Deputy Chief Minister after the 2025 State Assembly elections. His becoming the CM marks the beginning of a new chapter for his party in the State on the back of Nitish Kumar’s “sushasan" (good governance).

The outgoing CM, who has been part of Bihar politics for more than 50 years, assured the new leader of “full cooperation”. Writing on X, Kumar said, “Now the new government will look after the work in Bihar. The new government will have my full cooperation and guidance.”
