SC Keeps 'Udaipur Files' Release on Hold, Awaits Centre's Review

Bench says Centre’s review panel must decide on film’s objections before release decision

July 16, 2025 - The Supreme Court today, July 16, turned down the petition filed by the makers of Udaipur Files to lift the stay on the film’s release.

The Bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymala Bagchi said the Central government should proceed with examining the movie as directed by the Delhi High Court.

"We will keep the matter pending. We can have benefit of view of Union of India before the HC. Suppose union says nothing wrong then we will see that. If they make some cuts then also we can peruse the same. If Centre was not taking up the matter, then different. We are told committee has been formed and union is looking into it. We can wait for a day or two," the Court said in its ruling.

The stay on the film’s release had been ordered by the Delhi High Court on July 10. The film was to release on July 11.

The Bench further ruled that the panel formed to consider and review the objections to Udaipur Files must take an immediate call on the issue.

It said, “We expect that committee will decide the revision plea immediately without any loss of time. Post the matter for further consideration on July 21.”

The Committee is scheduled to examine the movie today. The Court also directed the panel to hear the objection against the film’s release raised by accused Mohammed Javed.

"In such situation, we deem it appropriate to defer the hearing and await the outcome of proceedings pending before the Central government," Supreme Court said.

Udaipur Files is a film based on the murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal who was killed in the city on June 2022.
