September Rule Changes: From LPG Prices to Immigration Rules, What Indians Need to Know This Month?

Some of these changes may bring relief to the common man, while others may increase costs. For this reason, it is important to know which new rules are coming into effect this month.

Changes in immigration rules

From September 2, the immigration process for passengers travelling abroad from India is changing at the airport. Passengers on international flights will no longer have to get immigration stamps on their boarding passes while completing the immigration rules and regulations. This initiative by the Bureau of Immigration aims to make the journey of international passengers at the airport faster and easier.

Passengers will be able to show the electronic boarding pass on their phone or a printed boarding pass as required. In the new system, immigration officials will no longer stamp boarding passes as part of clearance. Until now, international flight passengers could show their boarding passes during immigration. After which, immigration stamps would be given on them. That process will no longer be in place from September.

Will the price of cooking gas increase?

At the beginning of every month, oil marketing companies review the prices of cooking gas and petrol/diesel. Therefore, new prices may be announced on September 2. An increase or decrease in the price of cooking gas can directly affect the monthly budget of a family. The price of a 19 kg commercial cooking gas cylinder was revised in early August. However, there was no change in the price of a 14.2 kg cooking gas cylinder.

Car prices are rising

If you are planning to buy a new car, buyers may have to face additional costs in September. Tata Motors has decided to increase the prices of its cars and SUVs by up to Rs 25,000 from September 1, 2026. Hyundai has announced that it will increase the prices of its cars. As a result, buyers may have to spend more money than before when buying a new car in September.

Milk prices are rising

From the beginning of September, Mumbai residents may have to pay extra to buy milk. From September 1, the price of milk is going to increase by a maximum of Rs 9. However, this price increase will not apply to packaged milk. The price of milk supplied by dairy farms or milk traders is mainly increasing. Milk traders claim that this decision to increase the price is due to the increase in the price of cattle feed and other expenses.

Change in income tax return deadline

The deadline for filing income tax returns has also changed under the new return-filing calendar. This new deadline came into effect after the amendments made to the Income Tax Act, 1961, through the Finance Act, 2026. The last date for filing income tax returns for the financial year 2026-27 was August 31 for non-audited taxpayers earning income from a business or profession. The deadline for general taxpayers was July 31. 

Those who have not filed their income tax returns by the due date need not wait till September. They can still file their late returns by December 31, 2026, or before the assessment is completed, whichever is earlier. A penalty of up to Rs 1,000 may be imposed for late returns if the total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh. In other cases, the fee can be up to Rs 5,000.
