Urgent Need to Stop Sewage Leakage into Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola faces sewage contamination issues

Pichola Lake Pollution

After the recent diversion of the sewage line from Lake Pichola, experts are emphasizing the need to prevent any sewage leakage into the lake. The objective is to ensure the lakes remain sewage-free and that lake water is not wasted in the sewage system. This urgent need was highlighted during the "Lake Dialogue" held on Sunday, November 3,2024.

Concerns from Experts

Dr. Anil Mehta, a lake expert, expressed concerns about the overflowing chambers and manholes of the sewer system in the alleys and streets near the lake. He noted that sewage and dirty water continuously flow into the lake, harming its ecosystem. Leakage from sewage lines also seeps through the ground and reaches the lake.

Importance of Healthy Lakes

Mehta emphasized that lakes are a sensitive ecosystem vital for tourism and the health of local citizens. He suggested dividing the sewer system into separate zones, with dedicated maintenance teams responsible for monitoring, upkeep, and cleaning.

Technology Use in Sewage Management

Mehta also pointed out the lack of implementation of the Internet of Things (IoT) technology under the Smart City plan. He urged the establishment of a sensor-based control system to monitor water flow, sewage levels, and leakages in real-time, which could greatly improve maintenance efforts.

Recommendations from Local Leaders

Tej Shankar Paliwal, a former member of the Lake Development Authority, noted that while the bypassing of the sewage line is a positive step, lake water is still entering the manholes, leading to waste. He recommended sealing these manholes with grout to prevent further contamination.

Nand Kishore Sharma, Director of the Gandhi Manav Kalyan Samiti, highlighted that problems in the sewer system are affecting groundwater quality. He called for regular testing of lake water and groundwater every 15 days. Meeting stressed the need to address the discharge of solid waste, plastic, and polythene into the lake, alongside stopping sewage leaks.

Local Reports of Sewage Issues

Before the dialogue, inspections revealed that sewage was flowing into some parts of the lake. Local residents reported ongoing sewer leakage problems affecting their homes and businesses, underscoring the need for immediate action.
