Silver Hallmarking Surges; More than 77 Lakh Items Get HUID
Southern States lead in silver hallmarking, accounting for 62% of all silver hallmarking carried out in India
August 29, 2026 - The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has shared that more than 77 lakh silver jewellery items and artefacts have been marked with a six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number since BIS first introduced voluntary silver hallmarking late 2025. Silver HUID portal was launched on September 1 last year. Although the testing is voluntary but its acceptance has increased rapidly since the introduction of the HUID system which is aimed at strengthening consumer confidence in the purity of silver jewellery.
In the financial year 2024–25, around 32 lakh silver jewellery items were hallmarked, but they did not carry HUID numbers at that time. HUID marking has been made mandatory for any silver article that is hallmarked.
According to BIS, more than 25,000 silver jewellers have registered for hallmarking so far. All over the country, 341 silver Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHCs) across 102 districts are conducting silver purity testing and hallmarking. The southern States lead in silver hallmarking, accounting for 62% of all silver hallmarking carried out in India. The western region follows with an 18% share, while the central region accounts for 10%.
The BIS recommends to look for the BIS hallmark and verify the HUID through the BIS CARE app when purchasing silver jewellery.
