SIR Process Date Can Be Extended if Necessary, Says Supreme Court

Rajasthan honours more than 2,500 BLOs; Udaipur records 111 top-performing booths as SC comments on flexibility in draft voter list timeline

Nov 27, 2025 – More than 6,000 booths in Rajasthan have achieved 100% completion of assigned tasks by the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) under the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll. Around 2,500 BLOs who completed their duties have already been felicitated. Among them, 516 Booth Level Officers were honoured at the State level by the Chief Electoral Officer, while nearly 2,000 BLOs were felicitated by District Election Officers.

Similarly, in Udaipur, a total of 111 BLOs have so far been included in the category of those who have been recognised for their performance.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Wednesday clarified that if required, it can direct the extension of the date for publishing the draft voter list under the SIR of the electoral roll. The observation came during the hearing of petitions filed by West Bengal, Kerala and Tamil Nadu challenging the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) SIR process.

During the hearing of petitions from various States, the Bench comprising Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said that the timeline cannot restrict the powers of the Court.

The Advocate representing the West Bengal Election Commission informed the Bench that December 9 is the scheduled date for publishing the draft rolls. To this, the CJI responded, “So what? If there is a strong basis, we can direct the extension of the date.”

The Bench also directed the ECI to file its counter-affidavit on the petitions submitted by Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
