Udaipur, January 22, 2025 - Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi has said that States should stop distributing free electricity as political incentives. He said this at the regional review meeting on renewable energy organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy in Jaipur yesterday.

The meeting was attended by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Naik, along with energy ministers from Rajasthan, Haryana, Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and officials from various States.

Minister Joshi said that if States were to offer free electricity by providing a one-time subsidy to the public under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, consumers will automatically receive free electricity for the next 25 years. The aim, he said, should be to empower consumers. By doing so, the States would not only produce cheap electricity for their own use but also contribute surplus electricity to the grid, thus meeting the country’s needs. This will help eliminate the financial burden of subsidies given by State governments for free electricity.

Rajasthan is also providing free electricity to identified consumers.

"Under the visionary leadership of Hon'ble PM Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is setting global benchmarks as a fast-growing economy. Renewable energy is not just a goal—it’s the backbone of our sustainable and prosperous future," Joshi wrote on his X handle.

Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma said that the path to a developed India passes through the energy sector, and Rajasthan will play the most significant role in this. The State will not only meet its own energy needs but will also supply electricity to other States in the country. He urged all States to work together in the renewable energy sector.
