September 8, 2025 - Four students from Barmer district did not allow the havoc caused by the monsoon to deter them from appearing for their exam. When Omaram Jat, Magaram Jat, Prakash Godara Jat and Lucky Chaudhari reached Haldwani on August 31 to proceed to Munsyari in Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, for their exam, they found that the road ahead was blocked owing to heavy rainfall and landslides. Both the Haldwani-Pithoragarh and Tanakpur-Pithoragarh roads were completely closed and every taxi driver they approached refused to go.

The four, enrolled at Uttarakhand Open University in Haldwani for BEd, had arrived in Haldwani for their exam scheduled at the Government Degree College in Munsyari.

Faced with the dilemma of missing out on an important exam, the stranded Barmer residents each shelled out Rs 10,400 to hire a charter helicopter. They flew to Munsyari, sat for their exam and then returned to Haldwani by the same chopper the next day.

"We started losing hope and thought we might miss the exam and lose an entire year. That is when someone told us that a chopper company, Heritage Aviation, offers helicopter rides to Munsyari,” said Omaram.

The road journey, which covers approximately 280 kilometres and normally takes about 10 hours, was completed by helicopter in just 25-30 minutes.
