June 27, 2025 - In a shocking incident, bringing back the horrors of the RG Kar case, a 24-year-old law student was allegedly gang-raped by three men in Kolkata on the evening of June 25. The accused were arrested on June 26 evening after an FIR was lodged by the victim.
According to the victim, she had gone to her college at around 4:00 pm for some work and was asked to stay back by the key accused Monojit Mishra (31), an ex-student of the college. Later, assisted by two other men, who are her seniors in the South Calcutta Law College, Mishra reportedly forced her into the guardroom on the college premise where she claimed to have sexually been assaulted by the three. The incident reportedly occurred between 7:30 and 8:50 pm.
Mishra, according to the victim, wanted to marry her but she refused citing already being in a relationship.
The other two accused are identified as Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20). All three have been sent to five-days' police custody while medical tests are being carried out on the victim, according to the police.
Mishra is a member of the student wing of Trinamool Congress (TMC). The party has acknowledged this but issued a strong statement saying this would not deter his getting the strictest possible punishment if convicted and asked that the incident be not politicised.
