August 22, 2024 : In today’s second hearing on the Kolkata rape-murder case, the Supreme Court urged striking doctors to return to work. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) provided a progress report on the ongoing investigation.

Updates from the Hearing

Psychological Analysis: The CBI conducted a psychological assessment of Sanjay Roy, the suspect in the case. The analysis describes Roy as having “animal-like instincts” and being a sexual deviant. Experts noted his lack of emotion when discussing the crime.

The CBI officer told PTI that Sanjay Roy showed no repentance for the crime that triggered national outrage. He narrated the entire crime to the investigation agency without displaying any hesitation. Numerous pornographic videos were discovered on Sanjay Roy's mobile phone.

Technical Evidence: Evidence places Roy at the crime scene. However, the CBI has not yet commented on DNA test results. Earlier, Kolkata Police’s Special Investigation Team had already linked Roy to the victim through blood and skin traces found at the scene.

The post-mortem report indicates that she was raped and brutally beaten. She sustained 16 external injuries and nine internal injuries, with strangulation being the cause of her death.

Akhtar Ali, a former colleague of Sandip Ghosh, claimed that Ghosh was involved in the "business of dead bodies."

Security Measures: A CISF team, led by senior officers, is assessing security at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The Supreme Court has ordered the deployment of around 180 CISF personnel to enhance hospital security, joining the existing 524 police officers. On August 21, CISF DIG K Pratap Singh inspected key areas of the hospital and identified three rooms for temporary barracks. The CISF and Kolkata Police will coordinate on further security measures.

Health Secretary Directive: The Supreme Court directed the Union Health Secretary to organize a meeting with Chief Secretaries and police chiefs of all states and Union Territories within a week. The aim is to establish safety measures for medical professionals in public hospitals.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for September 5, 2024. The CBI is investigating whether a larger conspiracy was behind the victim's murder.
