Supreme Court Seeks Centre/ECI Response on Plea for Biometric ID in Elections

The Supreme Court of India will hear a petition seeking biometric fingerprint and iris verification at polling stations to prevent fake voting and electoral fraud

April 14, 2026 -  The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition seeking the implementation of biometric identification — using fingerprints and iris scans at polling stations — to prevent fake voting. A Bench headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi on Monday (April 13) issued notices to the Central Government, the Election Commission of India (ECI), and several States seeking their responses on the matter.

The petition, filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay under Article 32 of the Constitution, calls for the introduction of a biometric verification system at polling stations to curb electoral fraud. It argues that issues such as bribery, undue influence, double voting and fake voting can seriously affect the integrity of elections.

The country’s top Court clarified that such measures cannot be implemented in the upcoming State Assembly elections. The CJI also observed that such a move would require the implementation of a major amendment in the existing election laws and incur financial burden.

The Bench has said it would consider the petition before the next general elections in the country.

“Whether such a recourse deserves to be followed before the next parliamentary election and/or state assembly elections needs to be examined,” the Court said.
