‘Take the Dogs Home’: Supreme Court Slams Stray Dog Feeders
Supreme Court issues stern warning of heavy compensation to stray dog feeders and States failing to prevent attacks
Jan 13, 2026 – The Supreme Court has warned of strict action against those who feed stray dogs and the States which are doing nothing to bring down incidents of stray dog attacks. Coming down heavily on inaction by the authorities despite repeated Court directives, the country’s Apex Court also slammed dog feeders who, the Court said, will be held liable for attacks which leave a “lifelong” effect on victims.
A Supreme Court Bend comprising Justices Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta and NV Anjaria added, "Governments are also doing nothing. We can impose heavy compensation on the state government in every case of dog bite, injury, or death of children or the elderly."
On being told by the Counsel representing Animal Trust that “humans cannot abandon compassion”, the Bench retorted, "Emotions are only being shown for dogs. When dogs attack a 9-year-old child, who is responsible? Should we turn a blind eye to this? Do one thing. Take the dogs home. Keep them with you. Why should they be allowed to roam around, bite, attack, and chase?"
The Supreme Court has been hearing the matter on stray dogs as a suo moto case since July 2025. The next hearing on the matter will be on January 20, 2026.
