Suvendu Adhikari Emerges Front-Runner for Bengal CM Post; Amit Shah Arrives to Finalise Leader
Suvendu Adhikari emerges as top CM contender in West Bengal. Amit Shah visits Kolkata to choose BJP legislative leader.
May 06, 2026: Suvendu Adhikari has emerged as the leading contender for the Chief Minister’s post as the Bharatiya Janata Party prepares to form the government in West Bengal. With strong electoral performances, including key victories, Adhikari is widely seen as the frontrunner, enjoying the backing of senior leadership, particularly Amit Shah.
The decision on the new Chief Minister is expected to be finalised soon, with Amit Shah scheduled to visit Kolkata to hold discussions with newly elected MLAs. The party has appointed him as the central observer to oversee the selection of the legislative party leader, a role that will effectively determine the next Chief Minister. Mohan Charan Majhi has been named as the co-observer for the process.
The BJP’s central leadership has placed significant importance on this development, as it marks a crucial political moment for the party in Bengal. While Adhikari remains the top choice, several other names have surfaced in internal discussions, including Swapan Dasgupta, Mithun Chakraborty, Dilip Ghosh, and Samik Bhattacharya. There are also indications of inputs from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh regarding leadership selection. However, party insiders suggest that Adhikari’s victories over Mamata Banerjee have strengthened his claim, making him the most likely candidate if internal consensus holds.

Oath Ceremony Plans and Key Decisions Ahead
Amit Shah’s visit is expected to accelerate the decision-making process, with meetings likely to be held either later today or the following day, depending on his arrival schedule. Notably, his appointment as an observer for selecting a legislative party leader is considered rare, highlighting the strategic importance of Bengal for the BJP leadership.
According to party sources, the swearing-in ceremony for the new Chief Minister is tentatively planned for May 9, which coincides with Rabindranath Tagore’s birth anniversary (25th Baishakh). Political observers believe this timing could carry symbolic significance, especially in countering opposition narratives around cultural identity.
Discussions are also underway regarding the venue for the oath-taking ceremony. While Raj Bhavan remains an option, concerns over space and security for high-profile attendees—including Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, and other senior leaders—have prompted consideration of larger venues. Locations such as Brigade Parade Ground, Shahid Minar Maidan, and Netaji Indoor Stadium are being evaluated.
Additionally, the BJP is reportedly planning to establish an advisory committee to assist the Chief Minister in governance, offering strategic guidance on policy and administration.
As the final decision approaches, all indications point towards Suvendu Adhikari taking charge, marking a significant political shift in West Bengal, subject to formal confirmation by the party leadership.
