Switching UPI Apps to Get Easy as NPCI Plans Portable Auto-Pay Mandates
NPCI is preparing this major change which would let customers transfer their existing Auto-Pay mandates from one UPI app to another
Sept 5, 2026 - The government is currently working on a new proposal that will allow UPI Auto-Pay mandates to be transferred to another UPI app, the way SIM cards work. The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is preparing this major change which would let customers transfer their existing Auto-Pay mandates from one UPI app to another.
As of now, when users switch to a different UPI app, they have to cancel their existing payment mandate and create a new one on the new app without the need to cancel or recreate subscriptions.
The change could particularly benefit customers who use UPI Auto-Pay for OTT subscriptions, insurance premiums, SIPs, loan EMIs, utility bills and other recurring payments. The new system would reduce the risk of missing important recurring payments.
This move, once it comes into effect, could open the door for smaller apps to compete with leading UPI apps for users.
