The 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Rana’s extradition is the first such transfer in a terrorism case
April 11, 2025 – 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused Tahawwur Rana (64) arrived in New Delhi yesterday, April 10, after being extradited by the US. Rana has been brought to India to be tried for his alleged involvement in the deadly 2008 Mumbai attacks, allegedly planned by the Laskhar-e-Taiba (LeT) which left 166 people, including six Americans, dead.
Rana’s extradition is the first such transfer in a terrorism case.
A US Department of Justice press release, sad, “The United States on Wednesday extradited convicted terrorist Tahawwur Hussain Rana, a Canadian citizen and native of Pakistan, to stand trial in India on 10 criminal charges stemming from his alleged role in the 2008 terrorist attacks in Mumbai.”
A Canadian national of Pakistani origin, Rana was previously sentenced in the US for aiding LeT and is lodged at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in Los Angeles, USA. His involvement in the attack conspiracy was exposed by his childhood friend and a key accused in the Mumbai attack, David Coleman Headley.
Soon after landing in Delhi, Rana was taken into custody by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and produced in Delhi’s Patiala House Court. Special NIA judge Chander Jit Singh sent the accused to 18-days NIA custody.
The doctor-turned-businessman reportedly has ties with Pakistan's intelligence service, Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), the Pakistani Army, and the LeT.
Meanwhile, the NIA released a statement saying, "The National Investigation Agency on Thursday successfully secured the extradition ... after years of sustained and concerted efforts to bring the key conspirator ... to justice".
