Tarique Rahman to Take Oath as Bangladesh PM on Feb 17

Tarique Rahman's Bangladesh Nationalist Party won 209 out of 297 seats in the general elections which were held on February 12

Feb 17, 2026 – Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Tarique Rahman will take oath as the new Prime Minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, February 17, 2026. The BNP won 209 out of 297 seats in the general elections which were held on February 12 for the 13th Jatiya Sangsad elections. The right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami got 68 seats.

The swearing-in ceremony will take place at 4:00 pm at the South Plaza of the Parliament complex instead of the practice to have it in Bangabhaban. The oath to the 297 newly-elected members will be administered by Bangla President Mohammed Shahabuddin, who is the country's 16th President.  

Rahman, who is the son of the late former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, will become the country’s Prime Minister for the first time.

Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla will represent the Government of India at the swearing-in ceremony in Dhaka.
