Udaipur, March 24, 2025 - World Water Day has been observed every year on March 22 since 1993. This year, the theme focused on glacier conservation. The day aims to spread awareness about water conservation and encourage people to take action on local and global water issues.
Environmental expert Dr. Anil Mehta said that although Udaipur does not have glaciers, it is important to protect forests, lakes, and ponds. Reducing carbon emissions is also necessary to prevent global warming, which can harm glaciers.
Dr. Mehta suggested that in Udaipur’s Girwa Valley, World Water Day should be observed as Giranad Conservation Day. He explained that many rivers, seasonal streams, and water channels from these hills supply water to major lakes like Fateh Sagar, Pichola, Badi, and Goverdhan Sagar. These water bodies help in groundwater recharge.
If this continues, Udaipur may face desertification and floods, which could harm tourism and daily life.
Self: Reduce water consumption at an individual level.
System: Ensure industries and buildings are not built by cutting hills.
Society: Conduct campaigns to protect lakes, rivers, and seasonal streams.
He emphasized that only public awareness and active efforts can save Udaipur’s water system and prevent future disasters.
