Udaipur, March 21, 2025 - The central government is working on a new policy to reduce toll charges on national highways. Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari has announced that the policy will offer reasonable concessions to regular users. As per the National Highways Fee Rules, 2008, toll plazas on the same highway must be at least 60 km apart. The total toll collection in 2023-24 was Rs 64,809.86 crore, marking a 35% increase from the previous year.
Annual and lifetime toll payment options
The government is considering fixed toll charges for frequent travelers. The proposed rates include an annual payment of Rs 3,000 and a lifetime payment of Rs 30,000 for 15 years. This plan aims to ensure steady revenue for the government while improving traffic flow at toll plazas.
Satellite-based tolling under discussion
Gadkari informed the Rajya Sabha that committees are reviewing satellite-based tolling. Experts are discussing security, privacy, and operational control before making any decisions. The NavIC system requires more satellites and advanced receivers for accurate tracking.
The minister assured that a new toll policy will be announced soon after the Parliament session. It will address existing toll-related issues and provide fair benefits to highway users.
