Udaipur, February 4, 2025 - A US military plane has deported 205 Indian migrants as part of President Donald Trump’s strict immigration policies. The plane left San Antonio, Texas, at around 3:00 am IST. A US embassy spokesperson in Delhi said that the US is strictly enforcing immigration laws and warned that illegal migration is not worth the risk.

India has said it will accept illegal immigrants from the US after verifying their citizenship. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar told US Secretary of State Marco Rubio last month that illegal immigration is linked to other crimes and is bad for India’s image.

There are about 20,000 illegal Indian migrants ready to be deported, and an estimated 725,000 Indians living illegally in the US. This is the first batch of deportations since Trump returned as president. Trump also spoke to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reportedly assured him that India will take back its citizens.

Military Involvement in Deportations

The US military is now playing a bigger role in immigration enforcement. It has sent extra troops to the US-Mexico border, used military bases for migrants, and is using military planes for deportations. Earlier, the US deported migrants to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. The Pentagon is now planning to deport over 5,000 migrants from El Paso and San Diego.

Military deportations are costly. A recent flight to Guatemala cost $4,675 per migrant much more than regular deportation flights by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
