Trump's Deal for Russian Diesel Sparks Debate on Oil Tariffs
Ukraine President Volodymr Zelensky has outright condemned this move by the US President calling it a gift to Putin
UdaipurTimes, Oct 10, 2026 - US President Donald Trump’s announcement on Friday, October 9, that the United States will purchase crude from Russia has taken the world aback, particularly India which, along with nine other countries, has been hit with additional tariffs of up to 100% over their purchases of Russian oil.
Following a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump announced the agreement on his Truth Social platform, saying that Russia would immediately supply more than 300,000 tonnes of diesel to the US. Russia will supply another 500,000 tonnes in November, followed by between 1 million and 3 million tonnes thereafter.
Trump has said this deal with Russia would lead to a sharp decline in diesel prices across the world, including the US.
Trump’s U-turn and sudden, arbitrary decision is being viewed as an attempt to appease farmers ahead of the midterm elections scheduled in the country for November.
Meanwhile, Ukraine President Volodymr Zelensky has outright condemned this move by Trump calling it a gift to Putin amounting to “an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged”, adding that Russia would repay with “further terror”.
