Jan 14, 2026 – US President Donald Trump has warned Iran of “strong action” over the country’s crackdown on dissenters and encouraged protestors saying “help is on the way” without specifying what form that help might take.
International concerns have mounted after reports surfaced that Iran may pronounce death penalty on those who have been detained. This was after Iran's attorney general, Mohammad Movahedi Azad, warned that demonstrators will be considered an "enemy of God", a charge that comes with the death penalty under Iranian law. According to reports, Amnesty International has said that there are fears that the authorities could resort to swift trials and arbitrary executions to crush the rebellion.
Trump warned Iran against taking such a step and was reportedly discussing the crisis with his national security advisers about appropriate measures to be taken.
“We will take very strong action if they do such a thing,” Trump said in an interview to CBS News.
Iran is currently in the midst of one of its most intense protest movements in years, widely seen as the deadliest unrest in the country in decades. Iranian authorities have been accused of using live ammunition, tear gas and aggressive crowd-control tactics.
More than 2,500 people have reportedly died in clashes and over 16,000 arrested since December 28, according to the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA). Casualties are believed to include protesters, security personnel and civilians. Other sources report possible higher figures, though exact counts are hard owing to communication restrictions.
International attention is rising, with political support for protesters from some Western leaders and global calls for de-escalation. Tehran accuses the US and Israel of political destabilisation and says foreign influence is fuelling unrest.
