Trump's Tariff Threat On Countries Opposing his Greenland Claim
Trump insists that Greenland should be in the hands of US because it is vital to US security owing to its strategic location and large supply of minerals
Jan 17, 2026 - The US President has warned of a possible tariff on those countries who oppose him from taking control of Greenland. Speaking at a health event in the White House, President Donald Trump said, “I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland, because we need Greenland for national security. So I may do that”.
Over the past few months, Trump has repeatedly insisted that Greenland should be in the hands of US because it is vital to US security owing to its strategic location and large supply of minerals. He believes that Greenland is under-protected as Russia and China take a greater interest in the Arctic and its minerals.
“If we don’t have it, we have a big hole in national security, especially when it comes to what we’re doing in terms of the Golden Dome”, he said.
Russia has brushed off the notion of Greenland being under threat calling it a "myth".
Currently, Greenland is a semi-autonomous territory of the NATO ally Denmark.
