Oxford 2026 Report: Udaipur Among World’s Emerging Cities

UdaipurTimes, Sept 23, 2026 - Udaipur has been featured among the world’s 57 emerging cities in the Emerging Standouts category of the recently released Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026 report. Of the 57 cities, 46 are from India alone which means four out of every five emerging cities are Indian.

Oxford Economics Global Cities Index 2026 report brings together a diverse array of indicators to assess the strengths, weaknesses and future potential of the world’s 1,000 largest cities. The report uses five categories to compare the 1,000 major cities. These are Economics, Human Capital, Quality of Life, Environment and Governance. 

Globally, of the world’s 1,000 cities, New York has taken the top spot with London in the second spot, followed by Paris at third, Seattle at fourth and San Francisco at fifth. Delhi is among the top half of cities in the ranking, securing the 268th position among 1,000 cities. 

The Emerging Standouts category of the report features 57 cities from among the world’s 1,000 cities. This category is given to cities in developing countries that are recording faster productivity growth than their national average and higher per capita income.

Of the 46 Indian emerging cities, three are from Madhya Pradesh — Bhopal, Gwalior and Jabalpur — and two from Rajasthan — Udaipur and Jaipur. Tamil Nadu has the highest number of cities on the list, with seven - Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, Tiruchirappalli, Tiruppur and Vellore. Karnataka has six cities - Bengaluru, Belagavi, Hubli-Dharwad, Kalaburagi, Mangaluru and Mysuru - while Maharashtra and Gujarat have five cities each on the list.

The report includes Bengaluru, which is emerging as a "global tech hub", in three key categories: regional leading city, developing metropolis and rising star. It is also projected to be the fifth fastest-growing city in the world over the next five years.
