Udaipur, January 9, 2025 - Udaipur has banned the use and sale of sharp nylon or synthetic kite strings, including Chinese Manjha, to protect citizens and wildlife. On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Udaipur District Collector Arvind Poswal issued strict orders to ban the use, sale, manufacturing, and storage of harmful kite strings. The decision aims to prevent injuries and fatalities caused by these materials.

Sharp kite strings coated with iron, glass powder, or synthetic materials can injure birds, animals, and humans. They may lead to severe injuries, disabilities, or even death. Violators of the ban will face strict action under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, the Indian Penal Code, 2023, and the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

National and Central Directives

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) had earlier directed a complete ban on such kite strings in its 2017 order. Similarly, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has asked all states to enforce this ban strictly.

Rescue and Treatment of Birds

The Joint Director of Animal Husbandry has been instructed to arrange rescue operations for injured birds. Bird medical camps will be organized with support from NGOs and volunteers. A helpline number will also be issued for timely assistance.
