Udaipur Dawoodi Bohras Hold Azadari Juloos, Majlis on Youm-e-Ashura

Emotional tributes paid to Imam Hussain (AS) and the 72 martyrs of Karbala; nohas and sermons stir devotion

Udaipur, July 7, 2024 — The Dawoodi Bohra community observed Youm-e-Ashura on July 5 in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS), the grandson of the Prophet of Islam, Hazrat Muhammad (PBUH), and the son of Hazrat Ali (AS) and Sayyeda Fatima (AS). Imam Hussain (AS) and his 72 companions were martyred in the Battle of Karbala.

As part of the commemoration, a traditional mourning procession (azadari matami juloos) was organised. It began at 2:00 pm from the Moyyedpura masjid, proceeding through the streets of Bohrawadi and culminating at the Vazihpura masjid.

According to information shared by Firoz Tinwala, Secretary of the Dawoodi Bohra Jamaat (DBJ), the procession included standards (alam) symbolic of Abbas Alamdaar. Noahs, or elegies, dedicated to Imam Hussain and the martyred family members were chanted during the procession. The streets were lined with women of the community who stood teary eyed as the juloos passed through with noahs and matam (beating of the chest).

After the juloos reached Vazihpura masjid, the Maqtal (account of martyrdom) of Imam Hussain and his 72 companions was recited at the masjid by Ali Asghar Khilonawala.

Iqbal Hussain Rassawala, DBJ president, shared that a majlis (religious gathering) was held on July 4 night at the Vazihpura masjid where Mudassar Ali Zariwala delivered a sermon on the tragic event of Karbala following which noahs were recited by Zakir-e-Hussain.

Juloos 3

Shaam-e-Ghareebaan (Evening of the Oppressed) majlis was held at the Vazihpura masjid the same night, according to Majlis Committee convener Firoz Nath. In complete darkness, representing the sorrow and oppression faced by the women and children of Imam Hussain's family 1,400 years ago, Mudassar Ali Zariwala depicted the scene of Shaam-e-Ghareebaan. Asrar Ali Jawriyawala recited a noha and gave the final salutation (salaam) in honour of Karbala’s martyrs.

With this, the 10-day Muharram programme of the Dawoodi Bohra community concluded.
