Udaipur Lakes: High Cleaning Cost, Low Results

Sewage discharge suspected in Udaipur’s lakes; lakes remain polluted despite cleaning efforts

Udaipur Pichola Pollution

Udaipur, March 18,2025 - Even though Udaipur’s lakes are overflowing with water, they remain highly polluted. The Municipal Corporation spends Rs 3 to Rs 4 crore annually on cleaning, yet the lakes are not completely clean. The revenue from boat operations and jetties is much lower than the amount spent on maintenance. Every day, tons of aquatic grass, water hyacinth, and garbage are removed. However, pollution continues, especially in Lake Pichola, where aquatic weeds grow back quickly. Experts say this indicates sewage discharge into the lake.

To tackle the issue, the Municipal Corporation is using a dredging machine in Pichola, Swaroop Sagar, Rang Sagar, and Kumharia Talab. The machine runs both in the morning and evening, especially ahead of the G-20 summit. Every month, around Rs 5.50 lakh is spent, and Rs 3,000/- to Rs 4,000/- is used daily for maintenance and workers wages.

Rs 4.50 Crore Spent in Five Years

Lake enthusiast Tejshankar Paliwal revealed that Rs 4.50 crore was spent on the dredging machine from 2014 to 2020. Another Rs 2.93 crore was allocated for cleaning between January 2019 and January 2024.
