Municipal Corporation assumes waste collection duties amid tender issues

Garbage Dumping

On Tuesday, October 1,2024, the Udaipur Municipal Corporation took over the responsibility of waste collection at 150 points across the city's 70 wards. They reported a successful first day, managing to collect waste from about 120 points, which accounts for an 80% success rate. However, 30 waste points were not attended to due to piles of garbage that had been left for three days. Officials are optimistic about achieving a 100% collection rate in the next two days.

The garbage was then transported to the trenching yard at Balicha. It took three hours to clear waste from points near the Luv Kush Stadium and the Moti Magri scheme.

Increasing Garbage Points in the City

Udaipur is facing a serious problem with garbage dumping in various areas of the city. Many localities are becoming dumping points, and heaps of garbage are piling up on the streets. This situation is not only unsightly but also poses health risks due to pollution and pests. One of the main issues is the lack of proper dustbins, which is making the problem worse.

In Sector 14, outside Govardhan Apartment and opposite Gambhir Clinic, there are large piles of garbage lying on the road. This situation is attracting street dogs, and the accumulation of waste is leading to an increase in mosquitoes, creating a breeding ground for them. Residents are very concerned about this issue. Mohanlal swarnkar, a local resident, expressed his dissatisfaction, stating that the area has around 250 apartments, and this road is the main route for people. However, the condition is so poor that it is difficult for people to walk through.

A similar situation exists in Kharol Colony, alongside Vidya Bhawan Girls Hostel near the Urban Bank ATM has been consistently filled with garbage. This site also attracts street dogs, which further spread the mess.

It’s not just the administration that is responsible; the people living in these areas also play a significant role. Many individuals are not concerned about the environment and end up dumping garbage in their localities instead of using proper dustbins for disposal.

Waste Collection and Transport Project

An investigation revealed that after the contractor agency left the project, the corporation's machinery was only able to collect waste from 65 to 70% of the locations in the city. To assess the situation, Municipal Commissioner Ramprakash personally visited several sites to oversee the cleaning operations.

On October 1, the municipal corporation faced a setback when no firm submitted a tender for the waste collection and transportation project. In response, the corporation extended the tender deadline to October 7, 2024, after making necessary amendments.

This delay means the corporation will have to wait for private firms to show interest before issuing a new tender. After this process, it will take about 15 days to assign the responsibilities to a new agency, forcing the corporation to manage waste collection on its own for approximately the next month.

It is clear that urgent action is needed to address these garbage dumping issues in Udaipur. The city requires designated garbage dumping sites and adequate dustbins to ensure cleanliness and protect the health of its residents.
