The Udaipur Sabzi Mandi will remain shut on 14 March in support of the state-wide agitation against the government’s notification on reduced margins for wholesalers. Hence, the wholesalers call to shut the Mandi for one day will result in the retailers too shutting shop and the small thela walas and roadside vendors not getting their fresh daily produce from the Mandi to sell to the end consumers.

What is the notification

Rajasthan government has reduced the official margin permissible by wholesalers from the retailers in Mandis across Rajasthan. Earlier the brokerage was 6% of the purchase amount and now the government has reduced the margin to 5%.

What is aadtya (Margin)

Aadtya is the margin that the wholesalers are authorized to charge from their purchasers (big and small retailers). Wholesalers purchase the produce in large quantities from farmers on a daily basis and then distribute it as per requirement among the big and small retailers in the Mandi. On this sale, they charge their margins, which is determined by the government in the interest of the farmers.

The wholesalers at the Mandi’s in Rajasthan have taken a joint call to present their case to the government to NOT reduce the percentage for the brokers.
