Udaipur, December 27, 2024 - The State Government has issued a notification with its approval to bring 34 villages from 19 gram panchayats, adjacent to the city, within the jurisdiction of the  Udaipur Nagar Nigam. The expansion of the limit of the Nagar Nigam is happening after almost 55 years, the last time being in 1969.

According to Municipal Commissioner Ram Prakash, the State Government made this move using its powers under Section 3(1)(k)(i) and under Sub-section (8)(g) of the Rajasthan Municipalities Act, 2009 (Act No. 18 of 2009).

A proposal to extend the municipal area was first discussed in a Corporation board meeting in 2008. In 2012, the then-revenue officer Nitesh Bhatnagar had prepared the proposal, which was submitted to the State Government. The process was in progress ever since.

Then on November 27, 2024, District Collector and Corporation Administrator Arvind Poswal, sent a proposal to the Rajasthan government on November 27, 2024, for inclusion of 34 villages from 19 gram panchayats, said the Commissioner.

Commissioner Ram Prakash explained that residents of these newly-included areas will now benefit from basic amenities provided by the Nagar Nigam such as water supply, sanitation, door-to-door garbage collection, street lighting and good roads. Currently, many of these villages lack adequate budgets which have hindered their overall development. With their inclusion in the municipal corporation, these villages will now receive the benefits of necessary infrastructure and civic services.

Gram Panchayats now included in the Nagar Nigam are the following:

  • Badgaon: Badgaon
  • Badi: Hawala Kalla, Hawala Khurd
  • Bedla: Bedla, Bedla Khurd

  • Kaladwas: Kaladwas, Manwakhera
  • Kanpur: Kanpur,
  • Revenue Village Ayad (Gramin)
  • Revenue Village Dewali (Fatehpura)

How will it change for the Nagar Nigam?

With the inclusion of these 34 villages, the geographical boundaries of the Nagar Nigam will expand, and its revenue will also rise. These areas have shopping malls, commercial buildings, showrooms, parking spaces, hotels, resorts and large parks which will generate revenue through property taxes, building construction permits and urban development fees.

Government properties in the new inclusions will now allow the Corporation to generate additional income by auctioning vacant plots of land.

The municipal corporation will also hire more staff. The current limit of the Nagar Nigam is between 7 to 8 kms. Now the limit will expand to around 16-17 kms thereby requiring more employees. Additionally, new sector offices will be established.

Ram Prakash said that with the inclusion of the 34 villages, the population of the Udaipur Municipal Corporation area will increase by approximately 1.05 lakh. According to the 2011 census, the population of the municipal area was around 4.51 lakh. As per the State Government directive, 10 more wards will be created, bringing the total number of wards in the municipal corporation to 80.
