In a significant development for railway operations in Udaipur, the City Station is set to introduce a state-of-the-art wheel lathe machine. This machine, costing Rs 20 crores, will allow for the maintenance of train wheels directly at the Udaipur depot, eliminating the need to send them to Ajmer or Jaipur.
Recently, Amitabh, the General Manager of North Western Railway, inspected the preparations for installing the wheel lathe machine. The proposal for this upgrade has been forwarded by the Ajmer Railway Division to the Railway Board for approval, expected within one to two years.
Right now, only the Jaipur station has wheel lathe machines in the North Western Railway. Adding one in Udaipur will make things easier by speeding up repairs for coaches and engines with wheel problems. Currently, damaged wheels have to be sent to Ajmer for replacements, which takes about 3 to 4 days.
Once operational, the lathe machine will expedite maintenance processes significantly. It can repair damaged wheels in just 40 to 50 minutes, saving time and operational costs. This capability is crucial as high-speed trains experience increased wheel wear due to frequent braking and operational stresses.
