Udaipur, February 3, 2025 - Udaipur’s wetlands have been rapidly deteriorating for the past 25 years. With the recent declaration of Udaipur as a Ramsar Wetland City, there is hope that the city’s wetland lakes will regain their original form.

A meeting called the Lake Dialogue was held on Sunday, February 2, 2025. Dr. Anil Mehta, an expert in water conservation, emphasized that this declaration is a tribute to the water traditions of Mewar. He called for effective efforts towards the conservation, enhancement, and management of these wetlands.

Tejshankar Paliwal, the former Member of the Lake Development Authority, pointed out that the alteration of the boundaries of the wetlands has caused damage to the lakes. This has led to the destruction of shorelines, affecting the habitat and shelter of migratory birds.

The Ramsar Wetland City designation is expected to boost tourism in Udaipur. However, experts stress the importance of ensuring that the ecosystems of the lakes and the surrounding hills are preserved and not harmed in the process.
