The eco-friendly Bamboo craft items are easily available in the markets and many small handicraft workers also produce a variety of Bamboo made things in their homes. Bamboo craft is famous across the world. What could be more interesting is that many luxury brands also use bamboo for making various products out of it. A range of Bamboo handicraft products can be made with basic tools and needling. You will find different items of bamboo crafts at Santoshi Mata Temple area near Delhi Gate, Udaipur, where local women make different items from bamboo.  

It is noteworthy that the bamboo baskets in which sweets are offered at Shrinathji Temple at Nathdwara are also prepared by these women. Women said that this is their family business and they work from 5:00 am till 11:00 pm. They prepare baskets from bamboo sticks and sell them in the market. Meanwhile, they also manage to do their household work. Another interesting fact about this work is that the work has been ongoing since the time of kings.   

The bamboo made things are sent in different parts of the country as well as they are exported  abroad also. They also make other things like mat and brooms along with baskets. A working lady said that the main season of this business is in Vaisakha  and Jyeshtha month. Apart from this it is sold in the wedding season as well. Here, the bamboo wood is imported from Assam. The cost of a bamboo stick of 25 feet is Rs. 200. Baskets, children swings, boxes, lamp shields, mats, curtains, kulfi sticks, handmade fans etc are made from bamboo wood here.  

Ramesh Gancha who works there said that they have to face many problems while making bamboo things as this business has no license. Many times police do not allow them to work so they keep their work going from home. The traders have demanded from the government to provide them machines to do this work as this will become easier for them to work. It takes around 2 hours to make a basket of bamboo.
