December 12, 204 – The Union Cabinet today approved the One Nation, One Election Bill and next week it is likely to table the Bill during the Winter Session of Parliament which is going on currently, according to latest media reports. The government may send the Bill to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for a detailed discussion. Some reports say the Bill could be presented in the Budget session next year.

If the One Nation, One Election Bill gets tabled and is approved in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, then it will be a major step towards simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections.

Earlier, on September 2, 2023, the Narendra Modi-led Central Government had established a high-level committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind to examine the feasibility of holding simultaneous elections in India. The report prepared by the panel had been submitted to the Cabinet on September 18, 2024 and approved by the latter.

Congress has already opposed the bill and the INDIA bloc parties are expected to remain united in opposing it.
