The Yogi Adityanath government has approached the Kanwar Unions and asked for cancellation of the Kanwar Yatra this year. Amid the rising fear of the potential third wave, the pilgrimage must be cancelled, said the UP government.

The Yogi government approached the Kanwar Sanghs to make an official announcement regarding the cancellation of the yatra as Uttarakhand government has already announced the cancellation of the yatra.

A dialogue is in process with the sanghs to convince them to call off the yatra for fear of third wave. It may be noted that in 2020, these sanghs had come forward to announce the cancellation of the yatra.

On Wednesday, the Uttarakhand government took the decision after a high level meeting between CM Pushkar Singh Dhami and top officials of the government. The IMA had requested the Chief Minister on Tuesday to cancel the yatra.
