'Lost the Keys', Says Iran to US Deadline for Opening Strait of Hormuz
Iran calls Trump an 'unstable, delusional figure', who lacks 'personal, behavioural and verbal balance'; mediators push for 45-day ceasefire
April 6, 2026 – The deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Iran to open the Strait of Hormuz or face attacks on its major infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, appears to have been extended by 24 hours after Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform “Tuesday, 8:00 P.M. Eastern Time!".
Speaking to the Wall Street Journal on Sunday (April 5), the US President said, "We are in a position that's very strong, and that country will take 20 years to rebuild, if they're lucky, if they have a country…." And if they don't do something by Tuesday evening, they won't have any power plants and they won't have any bridges standing."
Iran has retaliated calling Trump an "unstable, delusional figure", who lacks "personal, behavioural and verbal balance"and dismissed his warning with comments like "we've lost the keys". Iran's culture minister Sayed Reza Salihi-Amiri reiterated that the Strait remains closed to Iran's enemies.
At home, Trump has come under fire from Democrats for issuing “war crime” threats to Iran .
Meanwhile, Iran continues to punish its Gulf neighbours by launching drones and missiles. In Abu Dhabi, a Ghanian national was injured owing to falling debris from an interception.
In Kuwait, overnight Iranian drone attacks hit and damaged two power and water desalination plants and led to fire at Shuwaikh Oil Sector Complex and also caused major damage to a government office complex. No casualties have been reported.
At least 13 people were reported killed in an airstrike Monday (April 6) morning near Tehran in a US-Israel attack on a residential building. In another attack by Iran on Israel, two people were killed after a ballistic missile struck a residential building in Haifa.
And even as the war rages on with both sides showing no signs of de-escalation, Pakistani, Egyptian and Turkish mediators are trying to push for a 45-day ceasefire.
